The power of the written word is often underestimated. Why? Because the results are only appreciated in retrospect.
TRUSTING that your own words carry the weight to change your life so very powerful! Sometimes you might need someone elses help to find those words within you.
Thoughts are Things
A dozen or so years ago I met a sage, at least he was to me. A hugely successful entrepreneur, this man took the time and shared his life story with me. One of the first things he shared with me was that Thoughts are Things. At first, as much as I didn’t want to admit it, I struggled with that concept. I knew it on a subconscious level, but consciously as I tried to dissect that phrase the understanding of it would evaporate as quickly as it made sense to me.
This man I am talking about was in his eighties and had just filed for a divorce. I was going through one myself, but it fascinated me to think this man wanted to change his life instead of settle. We soon became friends. The reality is; he was hugely influential in changing the course of my life.
Every morning at 6:45, he was committed to waking me with a phone call. “Good Morning, The Good Lord is with us, the sun has risen, and he has given us a new day!” Being raised Catholic, I would automatically respond, “Also with you, Amen.” His next words were, “Now get out of bed!” AUCH, I would scream in my head – all I wanted to do was sleep off my semi-depression and get some rest, after all with two kids at home, daily sports, dinner, homework, laundry, etc., I usually did not get to bed until past midnight!
I remember I asked him once, “What time do you go to bed at night?” He said, “Around nine o’clock. But that doesn’t matter I am 82, and you are almost half my age!” He outranked me there and to be honest; he had more energy than anyone I knew that age or even forty years younger. He admitted, “I kick myself in the butt every morning to get out of bed, and I am on the road by 7 am. If I can do it, you can.”
Remind Me What I Forgot?
He was a consummate inventor and entrepreneur. His brain never turned off. He had his goals for each day, and he had plans for the next decade. I often met him to listen as he shared his life, his family, business and his philosophies. The philosophies are what I enjoyed the most. He seemed to have a grasp on how this life works. At the time I was reading many books about self-improvement, living in the moment, agreements we make through life and how to live life without fear. (check out our book resources page) He would share his thoughts with me, and there were times I would look at him right in the eye and ask, “Are you reading the same books I am?” He would just smile and say, “Some things are just simple truths.”
He would ask me questions, lots of them, and often I would feel a massive block from understanding his words. He would often say I am the captain of my own ship. That thought in itself had me imagine being at a helm, navigating through a dense grey fog. Always giving me the benefit of the doubt, he would say I may have forgotten what I once knew. That in itself would trigger a moment of grasping a new concept, or an old one.
I started understanding what a rich life I lead just with the power of wanting to live a rich life.
The Written Word
One day, he shared with me a secret. Actually, it was by accident as a small worn folded piece of paper fell out of his wallet. He did not let me read it, but he let me know the premise of what was the purpose of this small piece of paper. The tattered piece of paper held his dreams and his goals. It was to remind him every day his mission in life. I was mesmerized that such a successful man practiced such a simple thing. Undoubtedly, there was more than just wishes and luck that created his successes in life.
He sat me down and had me write my goals and dreams. It was a private moment. I was very used to journaling, yet, to write down my dreams for the future seemed a bit unreliable. It is far more sure to write about what happened after the day was done and analyze it than to write about the next day and what you will want to happen. But the process had me remember what a powerful manifester I used to be when I was younger. I started understanding what a rich life I lead just with the power of wanting to live a rich life! So I wrote down a list of things I wanted in my life. To be honest, I still wasn’t sure about the science of it all, but it sure was worth a try. Afterall, it worked before.
My friend also led me in a prayer we said every morning together until I memorized it. At first, he would practice those words with me every day until I spoke them with conviction. Later, I say the prayer with my son on our drive to school each day until he memorized it as well.
This prayer is the one he shared with me. It is a choice to want to change your life. It is an agreement with your self to be responsible for your days on this planet. It is a very personal invite with specific declarations that will evolve into things that will take place. It is wise to choose carefully your specific words. It made sense to me why his words, his declarations were private. And my statements were secret for my eyes only as well.
The fact is, there is a fundamental underlining truth to life. It is inspired by what we believe about ourselves. My thoughts at that time were very different than today. Those specific statements I wrote ten years ago have changed multiple times, and each time I have felt I have grown into them, in baby steps. Sometimes like a brick hitting me on the side of my head. However, I did ask for that. I once wrote, “Sometimes I miss the signs, so please, I may need a brick to hit me on the side of my head to be aware of the direction I need to go.” Well, it happened and that is another story.
Those specific statements I wrote ten years ago have changed multiple times, and each time I have felt I have grown into them…
However, in the big scheme of things, the four lines after the prayer, that were written for me have not changed. They are the most powerful statements in my life.
Throughout these past years, after my friends passing, I still talk to him and thank him for taking the time to pray with me every morning for six months. We shared so much together. His gift of changing my perceptions may not have been appreciated at the time as much as I appreciate them now. It is in retrospect I have the proof that what he offered to me in his guidance, came to be. I now realize those last few lines of the prayer have been guiding me ever since.
Grand Dreams Make for Great Accomplishments
His dream to use his creative mind to help humanity struck me as such a grand objective for just one person to take on. I had always wondered how in the world I would ever be a part of such a dream. That was my limiting belief at that time. I believe with those words in my subconscious seeking that vague idea in that prayer has guided me to co-create DREAM TO LAUNCH with A.D. Cook. Our book is set out to offer people who have been creatively unsure or stuck with answers. We unveil some of the chunks of missing information that takes the creative dream from wishing and wondering to the manifesting in reality in today’s Internet world.
It is Important to Recognize That Within Each of Us is a Great Power to Creatively Engineer Our Future
No one ever said it’s easy. (Except for those online marketing sites who try to sell you “easy” with a 20 video 45-hour course.) Perseverance, dedication and an undying desire to help people should never be unappreciated. That is what I admired in my eighty-year-old friend. What a privilege that he cared enough to call me every morning to make sure I didn’t sleep my life away.
I learned about his deep understanding of human nature, and his compassion for others. I learned so much and benefitted from his wisdom. Yes, yes to me he was that one person in my life, at that time I could open up to and talk with. It is tough to find someone to talk about both the physical and the nonphysical safely. I was seeking information at that time which I felt was just outside my grasp of understanding.
The Teacher Shows Up When The Student Is Ready
So often in my life, this has occurred. Writing dreams down with emotional connection creates a flow to an inevitable path for the fulfillment of a particular dream. Whew! And do I have stories!
Each one of us has a private dream and a unique talent to share with the world. Choosing to be a positive addition to society can be one declaration. Thoughts are things. Writing your thoughts down and reading them every day becomes a part of who you are. It is a conscious choice at first; then after much mindful practice, it will seep into your subconscious being.
In retrospect, my teachers have come in all shapes, ages, and intentions. What I have learned is that through it all, good, bad, happy or sad, our lives are molded by each other. Be in gratitude for the lesson, while staying steadfast in your dreams.
The Prayer of Faith
God is my help in every need;
God does my every hunger feed;
God walks beside me, guides my way
Through every moment of this day.
I now am wise, I now am true,
Patient and kind, and loving, too;
All things I am, can do, and be,
Through Christ the Truth, that is in me.
His prayer was very similar to the one above. So I am using the published version for this purpose. He added a few personal affirmations to the end. If you like, add a few sentences of your choosing.
One statement he wrote to inspire me is strong to this day.
My active and creative mind will bring forth innovative and inspired ideas to encourage individuals and help humanity.
